Van Hoff, Koos

Nancy made a sharp inhalation. One name jumped out at her immediately. One of her contacts in Amsterdam who had been part of the Obermayer kidnap plan. Koos was going to a place called Herzogenbusch Kamp. There was little she could do to stop the deportation, but all of a sudden she realised she had access to intelligence that could be of immense value, information that would allow people to trace their loved ones. Yet she was to be out of here in little more than a week. The thought made her heart clench.

So what to do? She couldn’t memorise all these names, and with Keller there, she couldn’t make extra copies. She continued to type, trying to figure out a solution. But before she’d even finished the list, the adjoining door opened and Fritz was there.

‘How are you getting along?’ he asked. ‘Is the first list typed up yet?’

‘Almost,’ she said. ‘On the last few names now.’

‘Get it done, and then come into my office please.’ She marvelled that after only a few hours, he was already behaving like a boss, rather than her friend. The power dynamic had shifted and it sent a frisson of fear up her spine.

She finished the list and typed the deportation order at the end leaving a space for him to sign. Keller, meanwhile, came and went in the office bringing various files and talking loudly into the phone on his desk, arranging a requisition for more prison uniforms.

She ignored him, and went into Fritz as he’d asked. She couldn’t help but feel Keller’s gaze on the back of her neck as she went.

As soon as she was inside the door, Fritz slid the bolt across on the inside.

‘It’s driving me crazy, you being so close,’ he whispered. ‘We don’t want to be disturbed, do we now?’ he said.

She swallowed. Here it was, the moment she’d been dreading. She’d have to do what he wanted. Just until the end of the day, then you’ll think of something, she told herself. She had to close her mind to everything he wanted to do, to lock it away in a separate compartment.

He kissed her sloppily, and pushed her up against the wall. She tried to respond but almost gagged. He had his hands thrust down the back of her skirt when the telephone shrilled. He left it a while, his hands roaming over her underwear, his crotch pressed up against her. ‘You want me, don’t you?’

‘Yes, Fritz,’ she attempted a moan of pleasure.

The phone kept on ringing. Finally, with one hand, he reached for it.

Immediately he shot to attention, ‘Yes, Herr Direktor,’ he said. ‘Yes, I’ll see to it. Heil Hitler. Sorry, my sweet, but duty calls,’ he said. ‘That was the boss. He’s ordered some interrogations. A man’s going to trial on Thursday next week. A high-profile case. They want enough information to sink him.’

‘Won’t it wait?’ She tried to look seductive.

‘Orders from Berlin. Willem Brant from the Sicherheitsdienst, Himmler put him in charge here, but he’s away so often that I’m always the one left making decisions.
